We understand that being an international student can be tough, balancing the pressures of living in a different county, missing family and friends and excelling academically in a foreign country.
Wellbeing and Pastoral Support for International Students
At Wakatipu High School, the happiness and wellbeing of our international students is our highest priority. We provide a positive, caring environment where students can reach their full academic, physical, and social potential.
Our comprehensive support programme includes:
- Dedicated International Staff: A specialized team to support you throughout your stay.
- Full Integration: Join standard New Zealand classes and study towards national qualifications.
- The House & Ako System: A school-wide pastoral care structure.
- Professional Guidance Counsellors: Confidential emotional and mental health support.
- Careers Support: Dedicated staff to help with future pathways and subject choices.
- The Code of Practice: Wakatipu High School is a signatory to The Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice, monitored by the NZ Ministry of Education. The Code of Practice provides schools with a framework for the care and support of students.
The House, Deans and Ako Group System
To ensure every student receives excellent care and guidance, our school is divided into five houses: Arthur, Duncan, Fox, Hay, and Mackenzie.
- House Deans: Each house is led by a Dean and Assistant Dean who oversees student welfare, coordination, guidance, and discipline.
- Ako Groups & Kaiārahi: Every student is placed in a vertical Ako group (Years 9–13) within their house, meeting three mornings a week. The Kaiārahi (tutor teacher) stays with the group for their entire time at the school, serving as the primary point of contact for students, parents, and staff. Ako represents a two-way relationship of teaching and learning where we work together to help students thrive.
Guidance Counsellors
We employ professional Guidance Counsellors who work within the NZAC Code of Ethics to provide a free, safe, and confidential space for students and families. Counsellors offer non-judgmental support to help students navigate personal challenges and move forward positively.
-
Access: Students can self-refer, or referrals can be made by parents and staff.
Careers Support
We help students develop the skills to self-manage their future and successfully transition from school to further study or work. Our team assists students in understanding their strengths, exploring options, and making informed subject and career choices.
